Balanced Beauty Bristol visits Tame The Mane

Sasha Seaward

On a cold (as heck) day I wandered across Easton over to Tame The Mane. I’d describe Tame The Mane as an anti-salon, in that it’s the least salon-y salon you’re going to find! Friendly, inviting, everyone is welcome. They use eco-friendly, green products - often mixed by hand, just for you! You can have your mirror covered, or un covered. They KNOW the intimidating parts of your usual hair salons and have really tried to create the a much more relaxing, MUCH less anxiety provoking space.

Now anyone that knows me knows that I am fussy as hell about my hair. I’ve worked with incredible hairdressers, and wouldn’t let them near me with their scissors. And to be honest, rightly so, as not everyone “gets” curly hair. The fact that so many hairdressers out there just cut it the same as they would straight hair is just …. well, almost appalling. It’s pretty obvious it’s different, and needs to be treated and cut in it’s own special way!

Before….

Before….

I was lucky enough to get a cut with Lindsey “the curl whisperer” in London last year. And since then I’ve been terrified of letting anyone else loose on my locks. But I did keep hearing that the folk at Tame The Mane (lets call it TTM) were cutting curls in the same way as Lindsey. Dry cuts, curl by curl. I met Lara, the owner of TTM, for a chat, and I felt quite quickly that I’d trust her with my own mane.

On the day Lara had a good chat with me about what I wanted (TOP TIP: it’s ALWAYS best to go in with an idea, and pictures. Hairdressers sadly are not mind readers… so at least give em somewhere to start!!) Then she started to cut, curl by curl, just as I had hoped! She then took me over to the basins, and mixed up a treatment especially for me. I should have made a note of it, but I know it was flaxseed plus …something else. ahh! Sorry! Not helpful. But the something else was a powder that lightly exfoliated my dry, flaky scalp, whilst the flaxseed nourished my dry hair.

Lara then let my hair dry a little in a micro fibre towel, added some more nourishing flax gel, then just went over it lightly with the diffuser. See photos for the finished result! I’m growing my hair, so she didn’t remove too much, but it looks so much healthier, and in much better shape.

After!

After!

It was so wonderful to talk to Lara. When someone is enthusiastic and passionate about their work, it really comes through in the finished result. It was fascinating to hear about all the ingredients she uses. Her little product kitchen was like a sweet shop…. just filled with delicious ingredients (I mean… most of them were probably edible anyway ahha!). TTM also sells some lovely natural products, and if you’re after some definitely check out Bristol Made.

I honestly thoroughly recommend TTM. After travelling all the way to London for my cuts, I can now just walk down the road… AMAZING.
